In recent years China has started and implemented a number of rural regeneration programs unequaled in the West, by size, continuity and methods of intervention, aimed at the physical, economic and social protection and at the improvement of living conditions of villages and small towns of the country far from the big urban centers. In almost all cases, they are centers of ancient settlement and of agricultural-pastoral economy, very often inhabited by ethnic minorities, in which still survive the ways of life rooted in their linguistic, cultural and material traditions.

Among the most recent and exciting rural regeneration projects in progress is Pengjiazhai that of villages located along the west bank of the Longtan River, on the slopes of Mount Wuling, (Hubei Province, Xuan’en County) in a valley inhabited since ancient times by the Tujia Nationality, one of the ethnic minorities of China. These villages are now included in the List of Outstanding Minority Villages of China.

As part of the actions aimed at regenerating the village of Pengjiazhai located in the valley, the County has entrusted the task both of the territorial plan and of the project of main buildings, among which the Pan Museum of the Tujia minority, to prof. Li Baofeng of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (HuaZhong University of Science and Technology). The projects, with all the activities connected to them, have been developed with the support of the School of Architecture and of the Urban Planning and Research Institute of HUST, and with the active participation of the students of the School.

Considering the great importance, at the international level, of these projects, the Foundation EMGdotART promoted the presentation of both the projects, the territorial Plan of the Valley and the regeneration project of Pengjiazei, at Palazzo Zen in Venice, on the occasion of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale of Venice 2018.

Following this first presentation The Foundation later promoted a cooperation agreement base on the EMGdotART Foundation Award (initiated by EMGdotART Foundation supporting the academic exchange between SEU and IUAV) between the South East University of Nanjing, in charge of the regeneration plan of the village of Lianghekou, and the IUAV University of Venice, in order to draw up urban planning and building projects for the regeneration of Lianghekou, with the joint participation of teachers and students of the both the universities and the support of local authorities. The initiative was joined by Huazhong University of Technology and Chongqing University.

The projects produced in 2019-21 by professors and students of South East University of Nanjing, IUAV University of Venice, Huazhong University of Technology, Chongqing University, with the collaboration of Xuan’en County and under the support of EMGdotART Foundation are now presented at the Exhibiton “Lianghekou. A Tujia Village of Re-Living-Together”, a Collateral Event of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale - Venezia (May-November 2021).

The Exhibition has been organized by EMGdotART Foundation with the support of The Municipality of Xuan’en County, Southeast University, IUAV University of Venice, Huazhong University of Technology, Chongqing University, Thoth Hub, and Future City and Digital Architecture Association of Shenzhen.

In Western Countries there are thousands of historical villages and small urban centers in decline or abandoned, located mainly in peripheral hill or mountain areas.

In Western Countries there are good examples of physical restoration and rehabilitation of historical centers, otherwise destined to progressive degradation and abandonment, but almost always this rehabilitation took place together with processes of gentrification, of destruction of the previously existing social system, and of total abandonment of traditional economies and productions. The projects for Pengjiazhai and Lianghekou are exemplary because, in these cases, urban and territorial regeneration goes hand in hand with the preservation and development of the existing economic and social system and with the enhancement of the material and immaterial culture inherited from the past.

The Exhibition “Lianghekou. A Tujia Village of Re-Living-Together” will present to an international audience the regeneration project of Lianghekou as an exemplary model to follow.
