Chinese navy is developing submersible 'arsenal ships' that can fire missiles at the surface or dip below the waves to attack from underwater.

According to Chinese media naval experts have been looking into two types of partially-submerged warships both of which would displace about 20000 tons Popular Science reports.

This type of design could make the massive missile-carrying warships stealthier by masking their radar signatures as they submerge – or it could allow for high-speed operations up at the surface.

According to the Popular Science blog Eastern Arsenal researchers in China have been testing models of the technology since 2011 and rumours claim a full-scale proof-of-concept from the Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industrial Corporation will be ready around 2020.

The first type of arsenal ship would remain mostly underwater for stealth operations.

Absolutely. Hydro dynamically the designs pictured above would have the effect of pushing the sub up toward the surface as the sub moved forward thus wasting energy trying to keep the sub on the plane. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise given that the 'V' shaped bow which you find on surface craft helps keep the ship afloat by pushing it upward. The designs above therefore are both very crap surface craft and very crap submarine designs.

No... just no .. they tested this concept decades ago the features required to make a craft of this type effective at one depth damage its effectivness in the other. You cant just Thunderbirds it up with something and expect it to work equally well in both.

Technology advances along with design so it might be possible that it has moved on enough to make this possible. Then it is Chinese so I wouldnt particularly trust it.
