Message by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on World Environment Day 2021
On World Environment Day, I know that everybody is still focused on the global pandemic – coronavirus – that we’ve been struggling with. But that plague, coronavirus, is going to be dwarfed by the catastrophic consequence of humanity’s failure to combat climate change, anthropogenic climate change, climate change that is driven once again by our actions and our activity.
We need to redouble our efforts to control the rise in temperature to keep it at 1.5 degrees. That means we all have to make massive commitments to transforming our economy and getting back in balance with nature. We in the UK will work together with you and everybody else to tackle climate change, to reduce our emissions and to protect our planet for future generations.
It’s only possible to have this…have continuous prosperity if we do tackle climate change. Let me just remind you that the UK has cut CO2 emissions by 45% on 1990 levels, but we’ve seen economic growth, growth in GDP of 75% at the same time. You can do both. You can have prosperity and respect for the environment.
So, that’s the way forward, folks. Please, please, please make a huge effort to get your countries to make a significant, nationally-determined contribution to cutting CO2 and have a great World Environment Day.
