碗作為人們日常必需的飲食器皿，碗的起源目前不可考，不過可追溯到新石器時代泥質陶製的碗，其形狀與當今無多大區別，即口大底小，碗口寬而碗底窄，下有碗足，高度一般為口沿直徑的二分之一，多為圓形，極少方形。不斷變化的只是質料，工藝水平和裝飾手段。一般用途是盛裝食物。當今的碗已經是種類繁多、用途各異了。
